Light

Splash is the trade name for Hypoestes phyllostachya, a small, colorful evergreen native to Madagascar. In the wild it’s an unassuming green herb; in cultivation it’s been selected into a rainbow of freckled forms — the reason for its nicknames, Polka Dot Plant and Freckle Face.
Each oval leaf is stippled and splashed with color over a green base, and Masson Farms grows it in three shades: pink, red, and white. The effect is playful and bright, and a group of all three together makes a cheerful display.
It grows best in medium to bright light — enough to keep the coloring vivid and the plant compact (in low light it stretches and gets leggy). Keep the soil consistently moist in a well-draining mix, and pinch it back often to stay bushy. It’s forgiving, too: a wilted, dried-out plant will usually bounce back after a good drink.
