Light
Requires medium to high light and can tolerate some direct sun indoors. Rotate it occasionally, since it grows toward the light.
Water
It tolerates drier soil — water when the top of the soil is dry, roughly every 10–14 days. Plant in a well-draining soil. If it’s overwatered or kept wet, the leaves will turn black.
Humidity & Feeding
Schefflera love humidity but tolerate the dry air in most homes. Fertilize once or twice a year (more for faster growth). If it gets too big, prune it — it responds by growing fuller and bushier.

Schefflera actinophylla ‘Amate’ · the Umbrella Tree
Schefflera Amate is a superior, vigorous selection of the Umbrella Tree, Schefflera actinophylla, native to the tropical rainforests of Australia and New Guinea. Its name comes from the leaves: large, glossy leaflets arranged in a circle at the top of each stalk, radiating out like the spokes (or ribs) of an umbrella.
‘Amate’ was bred for lush, dark-green, disease-resistant foliage and a strong, tree-like habit, making it one of the best big scheffleras for indoor use — and it’s often grown as a “clean-air” plant.
It likes medium to high light (a little direct sun indoors is fine) and prefers to dry out a bit between waterings — roughly every week or two. The classic warning sign is overwatering: if kept too wet, the leaves blacken and drop. Rotate it now and then so it grows evenly, and prune it if it gets tall to encourage a fuller, bushier shape.
Bold, glossy, and fast-growing, it’s a superb green anchor for a bright room — just keep it away from pets and children, as scheffleras are toxic if chewed.
