The Aluminum Plant is a compact evergreen native to the warm, humid forests of China and Vietnam, where it grows as low ground cover in dappled shade. It belongs to the same genus as the popular Chinese Money Plant, but is grown for its foliage rather than its coins.
Its name comes from the leaves: oval, quilted, deep green, and painted with raised silver patches that catch the light like brushed metal — the same effect that earns it the nickname “Watermelon Pilea.” It stays low and bushy, and responds well to a pinch, which keeps it dense and full.
Give it bright, indirect light (it also takes part shade), water when the top inch dries, and offer a little humidity. A peat-based, well-draining mix and feeding through the growing season keep the silver markings crisp.
Small, shiny, and non-toxic, it’s a fun, safe, beginner-friendly plant for tight spaces and plant shelves.
