Santa Rita Prickly Pear
Opuntia santa-rita · Native to Arizona, New Mexico, and Mexico
A spectacular Prickly Pear with large, round pads that turn vivid purple in cool weather — one of the most dramatically colored cacti available and an outstanding ornamental plant.
Available in 4½ inch
Care
Light
Full, direct sun. Cold temperatures and full sun together produce the most intense purple coloration.
Water
Extremely drought tolerant. Water occasionally in summer; almost none in winter.
Soil & Feeding
Fast-draining, lean cactus mix. Minimal feeding — rich soil reduces the purple coloration.
Quick Tip
The purple color intensifies in cold, dry conditions and fades to blue-green in warmth — this is natural and expected.
