Plant Bio

Mammillaria spinosissima rubrispina · also called the Red-Spined Pincushion

Native to the warm, rocky slopes of Guerrero and Morelos in Mexico, this is one of the most spine-dense Mammillarias — so covered in ruby-red spines that the green body beneath is barely visible.

Its cylindrical stem bears dense, interlocking white radial spines and vivid wine-red to ruby central spines, creating a bold, all-over color effect.

Each spring it produces a neat ring of small pink to carmine flowers around the upper portion of the stem, adding color on color to an already striking plant.

What makes it special?

  • One of the most spine-dense Mammillarias, with near-total ruby-red spine coverage.
  • The vivid red spine color is far more intense than most pincushion cacti.
  • Tolerates a range of indoor conditions while staying compact and tidy.

Note: Very dense, sharp spines — handle with thick gloves. Keep away from children and pets. Grown for ornamental purposes only.
