Plant Bio

Mammillaria rhodantha · also called the Rainbow Cactus

Native to the highlands of central Mexico, Mammillaria rhodantha is one of the most variable and widely cultivated Mammillarias, prized for the natural variation in its spine coloring that gives it a uniquely rainbow-like appearance.

Its cylindrical body bears spiraling tubercles topped with areoles that produce multiple colors of spines within the same plant — white radials and centrals that range from yellow to red to deep brown, all mixed together in each areole.

It blooms prolifically in spring and summer with neat rings of magenta to carmine flowers that wrap around the upper stem, adding vivid color on color.

What makes it special?

  • Naturally multi-colored spines create a unique, rainbow-like visual effect unlike any other Mammillaria.
  • One of the most prolific bloomers in the genus, with vivid magenta flowers.
  • Highly variable — no two plants will have quite the same spine color combination.

Note: Has medium spines — handle with care. Keep away from children and pets. Grown for ornamental purposes only.
