Astrophytum ornatum · also called the Star Cactus or Ornamented Bishop’s Cap
Native to the semi-arid highlands of central Mexico, Astrophytum ornatum is the largest and most dramatic member of the star cactus genus. It grows wild in the states of Hidalgo and Querétaro, where it can reach impressive heights in the wild.
What sets it apart is its deeply ridged, columnar body decorated with bands of white woolly scales that spiral up the ribs — a pattern that looks almost painted on. Stout yellow-brown spines line each rib edge, adding to its bold, architectural character.
Mature plants produce large, showy yellow flowers at the crown, a reward for patient growers. It is a slow grower, but its striking form makes every inch worthwhile.
