Mammillaria rhodantha subsp. pringlei · also called Mammillaria Pringlei Crestata
A subspecies of one of the most commonly cultivated Mammillarias, native to central Mexico. The crested form occurs when the plant’s growing point undergoes a mutation causing it to expand laterally rather than in a single direction.
The result is a flat, fan-shaped or convoluted, brain-like form that can reach impressive widths. The entire surface is covered in the golden-yellow spines characteristic of this subspecies — giving the crest a warm, glowing appearance.
Crested cacti are prized by collectors worldwide for their rarity and sculptural individuality. Every crested plant is literally unique in its exact shape — no two will ever grow identically.
