Mammillaria polythele · also called the Many-nippled Mammillaria
Native to the scrubland and rocky slopes of Hidalgo and Querétaro in central Mexico, Mammillaria polythele is a more columnar member of a largely globular genus — it grows upright where most of its relatives stay round.
Its stem is covered in dense, rounded tubercles that create an even, textured surface. Over time the plant grows into a tall, stout column that becomes increasingly impressive.
Like many Mammillarias, it blooms freely during the growing season, producing neat rings of small pink flowers near the crown that encircle the top of the stem.
