Water when the top inch of soil feels dry, but avoid overwatering, as basil prefers well-drained soil. Ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent root rot.

Regularly pinch off leaves to promote bushy growth and prevent flowering, which can affect the flavor. If flowers do appear, trim them to encourage new leaf production.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups fresh basil leaves (packed)
  • 1/3 cup Parmesan (grated)

  • 1–2 garlic cloves

Steps

  1. Toast nuts (optional): Toast in a dry pan 3–5 minutes until fragrant; cool.
  2. Blend base: In a food processor, pulse nuts + garlic + Parmesan a few times.
  3. Add basil: Add basil and pulse until chopped.
  4. Stream oil: With the processor running, slowly pour in olive oil until smooth-ish.
  5. Season: Taste and adjust salt, pepper, and lemon.
