Care

Light

Grows well in medium to bright light, but keep the leaves out of direct sun, which scorches them and fades the pinstripes.

Water

Calathea like to stay moist but not soggy, so water just as the top of the soil dries out. Leaves turn brown if it dries out too much or too often. It loves humidity — mist regularly or raise humidity to keep it happy.

Soil & Feeding

Use a loose, well-draining potting soil; a peat-based mix is ideal. Fertilize once or twice a year in spring or summer.

Details

Calathea are called prayer plants because the leaves close up at night, like a pair of praying hands.

Plant Bio

Goeppertia ornata (formerly Calathea ornata) · the Pinstripe Plant

Calathea Ornata is one of the most striking of the prayer plants, native to the tropical rainforests of South America, particularly Colombia and Venezuela. Its deep green, oval leaves are finely brushed with pairs of pink-to-white pinstripes that look almost hand-painted, while the undersides glow a rich purple.

Like all calatheas, it’s a “prayer plant”: its leaves rise and fold together at night, then open again by day, a gentle daily movement called nyctinasty.

It rewards a little attention. It wants medium to bright light out of direct sun, soil kept lightly moist (never soggy, never bone-dry), and good humidity — browning leaf edges are its way of asking for more moisture in the air. Use a loose, peat-based mix and feed lightly in the warm months.

Beautifully patterned, air-purifying, and completely pet-friendly, it’s a lovely (if slightly fussy) choice for a humid, bright spot.
