Care

Light

Nanouk does very well in bright, indirect light or even full sun. Bright light brings out its color and encourages flowering; too little light and the foliage fades.

Water

Do not overwater — allow it to dry out between waterings, usually about once a week.

Feeding

Fertilizer isn’t necessary, but you can feed it with a half-strength liquid fertilizer during the growing season. Pinch it back to keep it full and bushy.

Plant Bio

Tradescantia albiflora ‘Nanouk’ · also sold as Fantasy Venice

Nanouk is a modern, patented Tradescantia (part of the “wandering dude” group) bred in the Netherlands for its bold color and sturdy, easy nature. Its thick, slightly fuzzy leaves are boldly striped in green, cream, and vivid bubblegum pink, with rich purple undersides — and it trails vigorously, making it a natural showpiece for a hanging basket.

It’s about as easy and fast as trailing plants get. The main things it wants are light and restraint with the watering can.

Give it plenty of bright light (it even takes some direct sun) to keep that pink coloring vivid — in dim spots the color fades to plain green. Let the soil dry between waterings (roughly weekly) and never keep it soggy. Pinch it back regularly and it stays full and bushy rather than straggly.

Colorful, cheerful, and practically foolproof — just note it’s mildly toxic and its sap can irritate skin, so keep it out of reach of pets and children.

Why people love Nanouk
