Care

Light

Thrives in bright, indirect light and enjoys some direct sun, which deepens its dark leaf color. Strong light brings out the richest near-black tones.

Water

Water when the soil is mostly dry, keeping moisture light and infrequent. Aeoniums prefer cooler temperatures and may rest (go dormant) in extreme summer heat — water even less then.

Soil & Feeding

Use a well-draining succulent soil, and fertilize lightly during the active growing season.

Quick Tip

Unlike most succulents, aeoniums grow in the cooler months and slow down in summer — so don’t worry if it looks sleepy in the heat.

Plant Bio

Aeonium arboreum · Tree Aeonium (dark-leaved form)

Tree Aeoniums are succulents from the Canary Islands, off the northwest coast of Africa, where a mild, Mediterranean-style climate of cool, wet winters and dry summers shapes how they grow. The dark-leaved forms like ‘Velour’ are selected for their rich, near-black rosettes.

Each rosette of glossy, spoon-shaped leaves sits at the tip of a woody, branching stem, giving the plant the look of a miniature tree. In strong light the leaves deepen to a dramatic burgundy-black, while shadier conditions keep them greener.

Unlike most succulents, aeoniums are winter growers: they do most of their growing in the cooler, brighter months and often rest in the heat of summer, when lower leaves may curl or drop. This is normal and reverses when cooler weather returns.

They like bright light, a well-draining mix, and a touch more moisture than desert succulents — but still prefer the soil to dry between waterings, especially during their summer rest.

How is it different from other succulents?

  • It grows on tall, branching woody stems, forming a tree-like shape rather than a ground-level rosette.
  • It’s a winter grower — active in cool months and dormant in summer heat, the opposite of many succulents.
  • The dark forms turn a dramatic burgundy-black in strong light, a color few succulents match.

Note: Aeoniums are considered only mildly toxic, but may cause stomach upset if eaten. Keep out of reach of pets and children. Grown for ornamental purposes and not intended for consumption.
