Plant Bio
Ferocactus hamatacanthus · also called Turk’s Head Barrel Cactus
Native to the Chihuahuan Desert spanning Texas, New Mexico, and northern Mexico, Ferocactus hamatacanthus is one of the toughest barrel cacti in its genus, adapted to intense heat and extended dry periods.
Its most distinctive feature is its long, recurved (hooked) central spines — often a vivid red or reddish-brown color — that give the plant a fierce, sculptural quality unlike any other barrel cactus.
In summer, mature plants produce large yellow to reddish-yellow flowers near the crown, followed by fleshy, greenish-red fruits. It is one of the few barrel cacti that blooms when relatively young.
What makes it special?
- The dramatically hooked central spines are unique among common barrel cacti.
- Blooms earlier and more freely than many Ferocactus species.
- One of the most cold-hardy barrel cacti, tolerating light frost.
Note: Hooked central spines can catch and tear skin — handle only with thick gloves. Keep away from children and pets. Grown for ornamental purposes only.
