Plant Bio

Mammillaria spinosissima · also called the Most-Spiny Mammillaria

Native to the warm, rocky slopes of southern Mexico, Mammillaria spinosissima is aptly named — it is one of the most densely spined plants in a genus already known for its spines.

Its cylindrical body is virtually hidden beneath dense, interlocking white radial spines and longer, often reddish central spines that project boldly outward. The effect is of a plant fully armored against the world.

Despite its formidable appearance, it is an easy-care, reliable bloomer that produces rings of pink to carmine flowers in spring — a cheerful surprise on such a fierce-looking plant.

What makes it special?

  • One of the most spine-dense Mammillarias — the body is nearly invisible beneath the spines.
  • The combination of white radials and colored centrals creates a layered, textural effect.
  • Extremely tough and forgiving — a great choice for beginners who want a dramatic plant.

Note: Extremely dense, sharp spines — handle only with thick leather gloves. Keep away from children and pets. Grown for ornamental purposes only.
