Plant Bio

Parodia schumanniana · formerly Eriocactus schumannianus

Schumann’s Cactus is a South American species, native to the grasslands and rocky outcrops of Paraguay and neighboring parts of Brazil and Argentina. It belongs to the genus Parodia, a group of easygoing, free-flowering globe cacti.

It starts as a bright green ball with many neat ribs, lined with clusters of golden-yellow spines, and slowly becomes more barrel- or column-shaped with age. The combination of green body and gold spines gives it a clean, classic cactus look.

Mature plants produce glossy yellow flowers near the crown in the warmer months — one of the reasons Parodias are such popular, rewarding cacti to grow.

Care is straightforward: bright light, gritty soil, and water only once dry, with a cool, dry winter rest to encourage blooming.

How is it different from other globe cacti?

  • It comes from the South American grasslands rather than North American deserts.
  • Its neat ribs and golden spines give it a tidy, classic ball-cactus look.
  • It’s a generous bloomer, producing cheerful yellow flowers with relatively little fuss.

Note: Considered mildly toxic if ingested and has spines. Handle with care and keep out of reach of pets and children. Grown for ornamental purposes and not intended for consumption.
