Plant Bio

Mammillaria hahniana · also called the Birthday Cake Cactus

Native to the dry hillsides of Querétaro and Guanajuato in central Mexico, Mammillaria hahniana is one of the most instantly recognizable cacti, immediately identified by its covering of long, silky white hairs.

The hairs are actually elongated white spines from the central areoles, combined with white wool from the axils between the tubercles, giving the whole plant a soft, white-haired appearance that inspired its affectionate common name.

Each spring, it produces a wreath of small but vivid magenta to carmine flowers around the crown that makes a stunning contrast against the white hair — hence the alternative name “Birthday Cake Cactus.”

What makes it special?

  • The combination of long white hair and vivid magenta flowers is uniquely striking and beautiful.
  • Named for its distinctive “old lady” appearance — one of the most evocatively named cacti.
  • Stays small and manageable while looking more impressive and character-filled each year.

Note: Has fine spines beneath the white hairs — handle with care. Keep away from children and pets. Grown for ornamental purposes only.
