Lipstick Echeveria
Echeveria agavoides · Native to Mexico
Bold, agave-like triangular leaves that flush brilliant red or pink at the tips in bright sun — the “lipstick” look. Compact, sculptural, and pet-friendly.
Available in 4½ inchCare
Light
Thrives in bright, indirect to direct light. Ample sun is what brings out the vivid red or pink leaf tips; in low light the color fades and the rosette stretches.
Water
Water only when the soil is completely dry. Its thick, waxy leaves store moisture efficiently. Always use a pot with good drainage to avoid root rot.
Soil & Feeding
Use a well-draining cactus or succulent soil, and fertilize lightly once a month during spring and summer.
Quick Tip
Water at the soil line rather than into the rosette — water pooling among the leaves can cause rot.

Plant Bio
Echeveria agavoides · “Lipstick” / Molded Wax Agave
Lipstick Echeveria is Echeveria agavoides, a species native to the rocky highlands of Mexico. Its name says it looks like an agave (agavoides = “agave-like”), and indeed its leaves are firmer and more sharply triangular than the soft, spoon-shaped leaves of most echeverias.
It forms a tight, compact rosette of thick, waxy, bright green leaves, each drawn to a fine point. In good light those points and edges flush vivid red or pink — the “lipstick” effect that gives it its name and makes it one of the most popular echeverias in cultivation.
It stays neat and sculptural, slowly offsetting, and sends up tall stalks of red-and-yellow bell flowers. It’s sun-loving and tough, asking only for light and lean, fast-draining soil.
Care is classic echeveria: bright light for the best color, gritty soil, and water only once the soil dries out.
What makes it special?
- Sharp, agave-like leaves give it a bold, sculptural form.
- Leaf tips flush brilliant “lipstick” red in bright light.
- Like other echeverias, it’s easy and pet-friendly.
Note: Echeverias are generally considered non-toxic and pet-safe, but are grown for ornament rather than eating. Water carefully — overwatering is the main risk.
