Care

Light

Thrives in bright, indirect to direct light. The more sun it gets, the more compact the growth and the more vivid the fall color.

Water

Water only when the soil is completely dry. It stores moisture in its fleshy leaves and is highly drought-tolerant — use a pot with good drainage to avoid root rot.

Soil & Feeding

Use a well-draining cactus or succulent soil, and fertilize lightly once a month during spring and summer.

Quick Tip

Unusually cold-hardy — it can live outdoors year-round in many climates, dying back in winter and returning in spring.

Plant Bio

Phedimus kamtschaticus · (formerly Sedum kamtschaticum)

Kamchatka Stonecrop is Phedimus kamtschaticus — long known as Sedum kamtschaticum, and still widely sold under that name. Unlike most of our succulents, which come from warm, dry regions, this one hails from the cold reaches of eastern Russia, the Kamchatka Peninsula, and nearby East Asia.

That northern origin gives it a superpower: cold-hardiness. It’s one of the most frost-tolerant succulents you can grow, spreading into low mats of scalloped, toothed green leaves that shrug off freezing winters, die back, and bounce right back in spring.

In summer it’s covered in cheerful golden-yellow star-shaped flowers that pollinators love, and as autumn arrives the foliage flushes brilliant orange-red. It’s equally at home in a pot or as a tough garden groundcover.

Care is effortless: plenty of light, gritty soil, and water only when fully dry.

What makes it special?

  • It’s far more cold-hardy than typical succulents — happy outdoors year-round in many climates.
  • Golden summer flowers give way to fiery orange-red fall color.
  • It’s tough, spreading, and pet-friendly.

Note: Stonecrops like this are generally considered non-toxic and pet-safe, but are grown for ornament rather than eating. The main care risk is overwatering — keep it dry between drinks.
