Plant Bio
Echinocactus grusonii · also called Mother-in-Law’s Cushion
Native to a very limited region of central Mexico, the Golden Barrel is considered endangered in the wild, making cultivated plants especially valuable to conservation.
Its spherical body is divided into about 35 ribs, each lined with clusters of stout golden-yellow spines that give it a glowing, luminous look in direct sunlight. The symmetry is remarkable — few plants look as perfectly geometric.
Mature plants produce a ring of small yellow flowers near the crown in summer after many years of growth. Its longevity and striking form make it a prized centerpiece in cactus collections worldwide.
What makes it special?
- The densest, most symmetrical golden spine coverage of any barrel cactus.
- Native to a tiny wild range — cultivated plants carry real conservation value.
- One of the slowest-growing cacti, making each specimen uniquely precious.
Note: Dense, very sharp spines cause puncture injuries — handle with thick leather gloves. Keep away from children and pets. Grown for ornamental purposes only.
