Plant Bio
Gymnocalycium pungens · also called the Chin Cactus
Native to Argentina, Gymnocalycium pungens belongs to a large genus of South American cacti known for their ribbed, flattened to globular forms and the distinctive chin-like protrusions below each areole — the feature that gives the whole genus its common name.
Unlike most cacti, Gymnocalyciums evolved in shaded grassland and scrubland environments, which is why they are naturally more tolerant of reduced light than most desert cacti.
They are prolific bloomers, producing flowers in shades of white, pink, or red, often when still quite young — making them one of the most rewarding cacti for indoor growers.
What makes it special?
- More shade-tolerant than the vast majority of cacti — a genuine indoor performer.
- The chin-like tubercles below the areoles are a unique identifying feature of the genus.
- Blooms at a young age, rewarding even new growers quickly.
Note: Has spines that can irritate skin — handle with care. Keep away from children and pets. Grown for ornamental purposes only.
