Plant Bio
Ferocactus histrix · also called the Electrode Cactus
Native to the highland semi-arid regions of central Mexico, Ferocactus histrix is one of the more impressive members of the barrel cactus genus, capable of reaching substantial size over decades of slow, steady growth.
Its most distinctive feature is the vivid banding of red and yellow on its spines, which gives it an almost candy-striped appearance — the origin of its colorful common name. The ribs are prominent and the overall form is boldly architectural.
Mature plants produce yellow flowers near the crown in summer, adding to its appeal as a long-term statement plant that grows more impressive with each passing year.
What makes it special?
- The vivid red-and-yellow banded spines are unlike any other barrel cactus.
- Native to highland Mexico, so slightly more cold-tolerant than lowland barrel cacti.
- One of the slower-growing Ferocactus, which makes mature specimens genuinely valuable.
Note: Large, stout spines — handle only with thick leather gloves. Keep away from children and pets. Grown for ornamental purposes only.
