Pilosocereus pachycladus · the Blue Columnar Cactus
The Brazilian Torch is a tall columnar cactus native to eastern Brazil, where it grows in the dry caatinga as branching, tree-like pillars that can reach impressive heights in the wild.
It’s a close relative of the Blue Torch and shares the same prized blue coloring — ribbed stems coated in a waxy, powder-blue bloom, accented with golden spines and tufts of white wool at the areoles. With age it branches into a candelabra of upright blue columns.
Mature plants produce large, funnel-shaped flowers that open at night and are followed by rounded fruit. In a pot it grows slowly, holding its bold vertical line for years.
Care is straightforward: lots of direct sun to keep the blue vivid, sharp drainage, and water only when fully dry.
How is it different from other columnar cacti?
