Plant Bio
Ferocactus glaucescens · also called the Glaucous Barrel Cactus
Native to the limestone hills of Hidalgo, Mexico, Ferocactus glaucescens is prized among collectors for its striking coloration — the blue-green waxy coating on its body gives it an almost painted appearance that stands out from every other barrel cactus.
It is one of the rounder-growing Ferocactus, remaining nearly spherical for many years before slowly elongating with age. Its pale golden spines are softer in color than those of most barrel cacti, creating a warm-cool contrast with the blue body.
In summer, mature plants produce rings of yellow flowers near the crown. It is one of the more free-flowering barrel cacti, blooming when relatively young.
What makes it special?
- The blue-green waxy body color is unique and immediately recognizable among barrel cacti.
- Rounder and more spherical than most Ferocactus, staying compact for longer.
- More free-flowering than many barrel cacti, blooming even when relatively young.
Note: Has sharp, stout spines — handle with thick gloves. Keep away from children and pets. Grown for ornamental purposes only.
